Today, Wednesday October 20 2010 Veeam will release version 5 of Veeam Backup & Replication. A lot of information has already been published on this exciting release, mainly by Veeam. Version 5 has a lot of new features which are totally new for backup solutions in the industry. No other vendor is able to deliver such good, usefull features like being able to run a virtual machine from your backup media.
Instant VM Recovery is like replacing your spare tire while the car is driving. Suppose a virtual machine or multiple virtual machines are lost because of deletion or failure of the storage array. Recovery of those virtual machines will take minutes if not hours. Veeam Instant VM Recovery enables to have the virtual machine run from the backup disk it was placed on during backup. How cool is that. Lost your VM? Just power on the VM from the backup. Instant recovery. After that, you can Storage vMotion the VM from the backup datastore to a new datastore.
A very good review of the new features of version 5 can be read here Veeam Backup: The Next Generation . The author Tom Sightler is a long time user of Veeam Backup & Replication and is beta tester for version 5. Very much recommended to read this.
