Automated site recovery for Hyper-V using System Center Orchestrator and NetApp storage

So far the only software solution on the market for automated site recovery of a virtual infrastructure was VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM). SRM enables to failover a complete site to a recovery site fully automated by a single press on a button. SRM is using replication features of the storage vendors which deliver an interface to Site Recovery Manager. SRM is able to present LUN’s to hosts, register virtual machines, start virtual machines in the predefined order, change IP-addresses and a lot more. It just runs a flowchart which has been made by the IT-staff.

For Hyper-V there are two solutions for an automated site recovery. Citrix Essentials for Hyper-V is one. It is able to orchestrate an automated failover of Hyper-V. See this link for more information.
The other solution is based on using System Center Orchestrator combined with workflows.

The Microsoft solution for automation of IT processes is System Center Orchestrator. This product used to be known under the name of Opalis. Opalis was taken over by Microsoft a while ago. NetApp has released the workflow for Opalis that allows you to failover between sites with Hyper-V and System Center and NetApp storage using Snapmirror replication .

At TechEd 2011 North America NetApp will present more on this at the session titled DBI336 Innovative Storage and Data Management Strategies to Power Your Microsoft Enterprise Applications
