VMware released a new whitepaper titled VMware vSphere 5.1 vMotion Architecture, Performance and Best Practices
The whitepaper gives some interesting details about vSphere 5.1 vMotion and shows results of benchmarks.
An enhancement of the vMotion feature in vSphere 5.1 is “unified” vMotion which is a vMotion and Storage vMotion combined in one action. “Unified” vMotion is equal to the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V feature named Shared Nothing Live Migration. This video shows how unified vMotion is performed
An official name for this feature does not exist. “unified” vMotion or enhanced vMotion are not officially used by VMware to indicate this function. It is an enhancement of vMotion.
Derek Seaman blogged about session INF-VSP1549 VMworld 2012: Insight into vMotion and Futures here. It has some interesting details and best practices on vMotion and “Unified” vMotion.
The presentation clearly talks about “Unified” vMotion.
