This post is an attempt to list the announcements made at VMworld Europe 2012 not already made during the earlier VMworld USA.
The USA edition traditionally has the major new annoucements but VMware makes sure it keeps some of its news for Europe. Always we will see the launch of a new version of vSphere at the USA edition. News on the management platform, mostly new releases are announced at the European event.
We all know vRAM has been killed. And we know vSphere 5 Essentials Plus and higher have added Data Protection and vSphere Replication for free.
The most important announcement in Barcelona was the addition of the vCloud Automation Center 5.1 to the vCloud Suite.
Another development was the release of more information and demonstration videos of VMware Virtual Volumes or vVols. This is still a technology preview and the technology might never appear in vSphere. However it seems very likely this is going to be part of the vSphere 6 feature set. It is a very usefull new technology which integrates vSphere with the storage array.
New product: VMware vCloud Automation Center 5.1
This software is a new part of the vCloud Suite, first introduced at VMworld USA 2o12. vCloud Automation Center is based on the DynamicOPS software (previously known as DynamicOps Cloud Automation Center) which was acquired by VMware.
Basically vCloud Automation Center is for hybrid clouds what vCloud Director is for VMware vSphere based clouds. It is an abstraction layer above public and private clouds.
vCloud Automation Center can manage VMware vSphere & vCloud environments, Microsoft Hyper-V and Azure, Citrix XenServer and public clouds like Amazon EC2. Besides virtual it can also manage physical servers. The plan is for vCloud Automation Center to support physical component provisioning via out of the box integrations into BMC Bladelogic for Server Automation, Cisco UCS Manager and HP BladeSystem. I have also see the IBM, Dell and VCE logo for supported hardware.
The product is not yet available, but will be coming in Q4.
New product: VMware IT Business Management Suite 7.5 – The VMware IT Business Management Suite gives customers transparency into the cost, quality and value of cloud services, providing a business context for IT activities and enabling fact-based decisions aligned with business goals and ultimately transform to become a broker of IT services. Availability is expected in Q4 2012
VMware introduced a new version of the vCloud Connector 2.0.
VMware added new features in current versions like enhanced support for Microsoft applications like Exchange, SharePoint, and SQL Server in vFabric Application Director.
vCenter Multi Hypervizor manager. This free add-on to vCenter Server available in Q4 2012 enables to manage Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V and Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V hosts from vCenter Server. This add-on is fully supported by VMware. In the future support for more hypervizors will be added. More info here.
vCenter Operations Management Suite Foundation Edition is now included for free in all vSphere editions. This provides vSphere Health and Performance monitoring, alerting, and trending beyond what vCenter can provide. The Foundation edition cannot monitor VM’s, and cannot do Capacity Optimization, Chargeback, Configuration Management, etc. Availability is expected in Q4 2012.
Project AppShift is focussed on delivering a user friendly userinterface for Windows application on tablets and smartphone. Instead of the traditional desktop interface when are familiar at, Windows apps are presented just like regular apps on an Ipad. We can easily switch between apps with a few finger movements. Copy and paste from Windows apps to native iPad apps is very easy. During a demo in the keynote VMware demonstrated the use of Siri (voice control in Apple IOS) to control remote Windows apps. You can start Windows application, search for documents and initiate a copy/paste action.
