Microsoft announced at TechEd 2013 in New Orleans the release of Windows Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2. R2 is not just some Service Pack but a new release with lots of new features.
For the first time Windows Server and System Center will be released at the same time. In recent past initially Windows Server 2012 SP1 was released. Then few months later System Center 2012 SP1 was released. SC2012 SP1 was needed to manage server 2012 Hyper-V. So while new feature of Hyper-V were available, it could not be managed by Virtual Machine Manager.
Finally Microsoft synced both development teams. Oh wait, during TechEd Microsoft also announced that Storage QoS and Gen2 VMs are not supported in SCVMM 2012 R2….
Public preview of Windows Server 2012 R2 is expected end of June 2013. General availability end of 2013.
Microsoft shows it puts a lot of effort in innovation of server virtualization and cloud computing. Many new features are promised to be part in Windows Server 2012 R2. Some cool features are:
- Storage QoS
- improved Hyper-V Replica
- online resizing of VHDX files
- shared VHDX.
- full dynamic memory support for Linux guests
