Any organization using IT knows: backup data should be stored offsite. This is done using replication or using removeable media like backup tapes. These are typically collected by a tapehandling firm or stored at homes of employees, in garages or sometimes not take offsite.
Cloud is a perfect place for storing backup data. No need for tapestreamers, tape handling, second locations etc. However this has some issues as well. Restore over the internet of lots of data can take a long time. Who has access to the data stored in the cloud?
Today Veeam announced a new technology: Veeam Cloud Connect. It enables Service Providers to offer cloud backup to their customers. It offers a shared repository for backup data created by Veeam Backup & Replication. It also offers SSL encryption of backup traffic.
At the customer site there is no need for installation of additional software. A customer simply selects a service provider, types in name and password of the service and then is ready to use the cloud as a backup target.
Cloud Connect will be available at the same time Veeam Backup & Replication v8 will be GA.
Veeam Cloud Connect is explained in detail in this post.
