File [datastorename] foldername/filename.vmdk is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore

A customer performed an upgrade of vSphere 4.1 to vSphere 5.1. Part of the upgrade was installing a new NetApp Virtual Storage Console vCenter Plugin and the NetApp On Command Host Package. Also the Snapdrive and Snapmirror software had to be upgraded to keep components compatible with vSphere 5.1

When making a backup of a SQL database using SnapManager for SQL we encountered an issue displayed in vCenter as:

File [datastorename] foldername/filename.vmdk is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore

Thank to this post we found out this is a bug in SnapDrive.

Its a bug in SD (503918) and will be fixed in 6.5.
LUNs greater than 15g cannot be mounted with VMFS_v3 containing the RDM-File. Only VMFS_v5 works (official workaround).

We then upgraded the VMFS-3 datastore to VMFS-5 and the problem was solved.

So thanks Zhen Mi of aranna.ca for creating a blogpost and thanks unknown user for posting the solution in the NetApp forum.
