Nutanix announced a downloadable, free version of its Nutanix Operating System which will be available as a public beta at the start of the Nutanix .Next event at June 8.
Untill now the Nutanix Operating System is bundled with either Nutanix or Dell appliances and is not available as a separate SKU.
Community Edition is a 100% software solution enabling technology enthusiasts to easily evaluate the latest hyperconvergence technology at zero cost. Users can now experience the same Nutanix technology that powers the datacenters of thousands of leading enterprises around the world.
According the Register “The limit to scale is four nodes, but as Nutanix explains in the recipe for the Dell version of its kit, each node can comprise four two-socket servers packing E5 series Xeons for up to 24 cores per sever.“. You can also use 1 or 3 nodes.
“The software itself is closely based on NOS 4.1.3 although Metro Availability, Synchronous Replication, Cloud Connect and Prism Central as not part of Community Edition. We do require Pulse (our call home functionality) to be turned on as well so we can see how the software is being used by you wonderful people. For upgrades they will of course be completed live and without interruption just as with our commercial software.”
