A recording of the VMworld 2016 US keynote of August 29 is available here.
The announcements were all on cloud solutions. On its cloud strategy VMware is shifting from being a service provider (vCloud Air) to a company helping customers with managing their multi-cloud platforms.
The keynote showed various customers using VMware SDDC solutions. Then Pat Gelsinger told about the evolution of cloud.
VMware told the audience endusers wants freedom. But IT is always responsible for control. The announced solutions in this keynote offer both.
One of the most interesting customers on stage was John Spiegel, IS/global communications manager of Columbia Sportswear. Columbia is an NSX user who has also implemented Arkin. Arkin was acquired by VMware in June 2016.
Spiegel told that the transition to cloud is not about technology. It is about changing culture. Two books he recommened which helped Columbia Sportswear: The Phoenix Project and Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World by General Stanley McChrystal.
VMware announced in the keynote these three solutions:
- Cross-Cloud Architecture (at 27:41 in the recording)
- VMware Cloud Foundation at 28:00 in the recording)
- Cross-Cloud Services (starts around 47:00 in the recording)
A demo of the Cross Cloud Services which is a cloud management tool delivered in a SaaS model starts at 47:21 into the recording.
Also announced was VMware vCloud Availability for vCloud Director. This solution allows VMware cloud providers to offer Disaster Recovery as a Service. There were no details in the keynote about this solution.
There were no announcements on vSphere, NSX,VSAN, vRealize or EUC products in this keynote.
